2005 NSSA Southwest Conference Update: Event # 4
By Janice Aragon

Conditions: Chest high on Saturday increasing on Sunday to head high plus classic Church rights and some very good lefts.

2005/06 NSSA SPONSORS- HURLEY INTERNATIONAL, BODY GLOVE, OAKLEY, HUNTINGTON SURF AND SPORT, FREESTYLE, OP, BILLABONG, SURFING MAGAZINE, SURFLINE, SNYPER SURF, CHANNEL ISLANDS, SEX WAX.

The makings of a fantastic weekend were in the cards for the fourth stop of the Southwest Open Season at Church beach. Church usually plays third fiddle to it’s world class neighbors up the beach (Lower and Upper Trestles). But the stars aligned perfectly as a building northwest swell poured through kicking up surf in the shoulder to head high plus range. Of course killer surf is going to help generate great performances including a ton of 8 and 9 point rides and a perfect 10 by Santa Cruz grom phenom Nat Young. The contests continue to be overflowing with competitors with over 300 of the west coast’s best amateurs competing for prestigious Open ratings points. **The ASP computer scoring system was turned on for this contest and will be featured at all ten Southwest Open Season events this year to raise the level of the game plus prepare our surfers for their professional futures. The Southwest Conference Open Season is regarded as the elite competition for west coast surfers. Divisions are offered in Men’s, Juniors, Boys, Mini Groms, Womens and Longboard. The Open Season is open to student surfers only.

OPEN #4 HIGHLIGHTS

NO MORE JINX: Spencer Regan smashed his own personal Open Season hex to smithereens with his biggest performance to date claiming his first ever victory in the prestigious Open Mens division. Although he has been blowing up in the Gold Coast Conference, Spencer has failed to make it past round 2 in the Opens. Not this time. The 16 year old from Ventura was on an Open Season mission. The final was no walk in the park. Spencer had to contend with #1 ranked Tanner Gudauskas, #2 ranked Trevor Saunders and Jordan Gaudet who just came off an impressive Juniors triumph (nailing a perfect 10 score) at Explorer #3 last weekend. Throughout the two days, Tanner G was looking pretty unstoppable exploding off the lip like a seasoned pro not to mention he’s won countless events in his neighborhood turf. But in the final, Spencer set the pace when he opened up the heat with a strong frontside attack on a set right earning a 7.17. Tanner G answered back with a blistering 8.0 ride while Trevor and Jordan were experiencing the out of sync blues. Spencer closed out the final in crowd pleasing fashion lip stabbing another good right and then finishing it off with a sick reverse. After the heat you could hear him declaring, “I broke the curse Janice, I broke the curse!”

T-GROM’S BACK!: In the Juniors final, Thomas “T-Grom” Clarke was back in the winners circle claiming his first victory in over a year. Thomas unleashed on a solid set right blowing the tail on the first section, then blasting vertical turns one after another and finally topping it off with a blistering layback snap. Judges rewarded that one with a very deserved 9.0. Open #3 winner Dillon Perillo came charging back with a 7.0 but was unsuccessful in linking up the 6.5 score to take the lead. Nat Young made his third Open final of the year finishing third however his gold star of the contest was that perfect 10 he nailed in Juniors round 2. Eli Vizsolay took fourth.

BEST SHOW OF THE CONTEST: The sensational surf set the stage and the Open Boys were killing it. Watching these kids surf made it hard to believe it was a 12 & under division! Luke Davis broke the final wide open on his second ride. On a lined up left, he put on a blazing vertical backside attack, nearly perfect to the tune of a 9.83 score. Kolohe “Brother” Andino fought back with a near flawless ride of his own, destroying a right with crisp off the lips and flowing rail cutties which earned a 9.33. Luke then used his strong frontside moves on a set right earning a 7.33. Brother needed a 7.84 to take the lead. With the clock ticking down to the final seconds, he stroked into a medium inside right with nothing to offer but a racetrack section. Knowing he needed to put it on the line, Brother screamed down the racetrack and punted a big frontside standard air landing it perfectly. The crowd roared with approval but the one move which earned a 7.0 score just missed the mark. Luke celebrated his third straight Open win of the season.

FOUR CONTESTS, FOUR WINNERS: The Mini Groms are spreading the wealth this year. In four contests so far, we’ve seen a different grom take the glory. This time, Johnny Elles took control of the final with a couple of good 5 point plus rides and then locked in a 6.50 score which was the clincher. Parker Coffin was a bit under the weather but hung in there to take second.

DEFENDING CHAMPION BACK ON TOP: Shaking off a couple defeats in the early goings this season, defending conference champion Courtney Conlogue was back in the groove carving and snapping every lip in her path. Lexie Papilion slashed her way to second for her best result of the season to date.

CHRISTIAN'S TOO HOT TO HANDLE: Fancy old school footwork combined with progressive off the lip blasts were the winning formula for Christian Wach who claimed his third straight victory. After the final announcements were made one of the longboarders was overheard saying “Who can beat him, who can beat that guy?” This time Christian owned the three high scoring waves of the final but only needed two of them – identical 7.83 scores.

COMING UP IN CALI: Next up is Surf City for Southwest Explorer Season #4 at HB Pier on November 19-20. HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM ALL OF US AT NSSA!
