Billabong Pro Mundaka CancelledAfter years of massive tide swings, inconsistent conditions, and unhappy contestants, the plug is pulled on the 2008 Billabong Pro Mundaka

![]() Alain Riou scores at solid Mundaka Stop Number Nine of the ASP World Championship Tour has been cancelled for the 2008 Season You can bet a few goofyfooters on tour’s hearts sank today when it was leaked that the Billabong Pro Mundaka for 2008 had been cancelled, according to an anonymous source. As one of the most electrifying years on the tour gets under way on the Gold Coast, the Basque country is in mourning. Their dreams of watching Bobby Martinez defend his back-to-back titles against the likes of Dane Reynolds, Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning and Parko in kegging lefthand bullet trains have been dashed. The event at Mundaka has had a history of cancellations after being called off in 2005 due to a bad sandbar at and again in 2001 because of the September 11th tragedy; this year’s cancellation is much earlier in the season and not due to unforeseen events. It’s long been rumored that many surfers on tour had become frustrated with the events fickle nature, some already citing they wouldn’t be attending this year. With Mundaka’s extreme tide variance and no reliable alternative waves other than the beachbreaks of Bakio, this has been something we’ve seen coming the past few years.
Unfortunately for the small Basque town of Mundaka, which relies on the mass of people who come to attend the contest every fall, they won’t have the opportunity to watch their favorite surfers in their own backyard. Stay tuned as more details develop on the cancellation of the event, but so far, no replacement contest has been scheduled.
