THE FIRST PUBLIC SCREENING OF BRA BOYS WENT OFF FOR A PACKED HOUSE IN HB LAST NIGHT AND DID NOT DISAPPOINT

It’s tough, gritty and full of fighting and rambunctious antics. It’s got home movie fight scenes and secret handshakes. Charging Ours and Cyclops, as well as the history of the Australian subculture. But most of all, this film is one of the most heartfelt stories of brotherhood you’ll ever see. Last night’s screening of the Sunny Abberton directed documentary Bra Boys brought together the likes of Mark Mathews, Makua Rothman, Dustin Barca, Rico Jimenez and Kaiborg who all came out to check the film. Everyone sipped on tall beers at Sparks Bar and Grill next door to the theatre, catching up on who’s been scoring around the globe before heading into the theatre to check the film. Then everyone filed into the Pierside cinema to view the Russell Crowe-narrated documentary on the Sydney suburb of Maroubra and its band of brothers known as the Bra Boys. The film is a turbulent sea of emotion that takes you from hoots to tears and back on several occasions. The session at the infamous wave Cyclops between brothers Koby, Jai, Sunny, and fellow Bra Boy Mark Mathews––which was shortly after Jai’s trial––shows the boys reconvening where they left off before Jai faced the murder charges: absolutely charging. After Jai is released free of all charges, the boys go on a tear surfing the world’s meanest waves demonstrating the unity they get from the ocean and surfing together. The film puts everything in life in perspective and is a must see when it comes out October 6. Truly powerful stuff.
