HUTCHINSON ISLAND, FLORIDA WIND FARM

Is there anything sexier than a wind farm? They’re almost like big terrestrial tassels, revving green motors across the country with every suggestive gyration, promising-earth friendly energy with none of coal’s dirty mercury or greenhouse emissions. But they can also be a big tease. Hutchinson Island’s proposed wind farm would be Florida’s first commercial-grade wind power generation facility, but there are several key concerns involving the access, erosion and a fragile eco-system. LEE COUNTY, FLORIDA FERTILIZER ORDINANCE

Love’s not the only thing that blooms eternal. So does algae, serving up a stinky bouquet of red tide and other problems. After years of nutrient-related algal blooms in waterways, Lee county is working on an ordinance that would bar fertilizing for a certain amount of time and add buffer zones around bodies of water. Tell the public and Commissioners you want to see the stronger ordinances in place. Click here to show there’s such thing being as too fertile.

NY BIGGER BETTER BOTTLE BILL

Ladies know: size matters. Especially when it comes to large plastic items and recycling programs. New York’s Returnable Container Act, also known as the "Bottle Bill", has prompted 90 billion bottles to be returned and recycled since 1982. Unfortunately, the law doesn’t apply to bottled waters, teas, juices, sports drinks, and coffee drinks which have exploded in popularity in recent years. The Bigger Better Bottle Bill will add the returnable deposit to virtually all other beverages and send the unclaimed money to a state environmental fund. Exploded? Deposit? OPPOSE NUCLEAR WASTE ON JAPAN’S COAST

A rosy afterglow is a good thing — a green radioactive one is not. This February, Japan’s Rokkasho Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Plant is scheduled to become fully operational, discharging the average plants annual radiation every single day. Even worse, they plan to release it into the atmosphere and into the ocean, threatening the safety of the food supply and the lives of future generations.
