My Spot with Jesse Evans

It was the US vs. Australia in Quarters. Jesse Merle Jones (Kauai, Hawaii) against Julian Wilson (Australia), and Mike Hoissington (South Carolina) against Dion Atkinson, (you got it, Australia.) Julian Wilson was under the Fox tent asking, "Who is Jesse Evans?" before he shredded Jesse Jones out of the finals. Atkinson and Hoissington had a fairly anticlimactic heat with long wave intervals and enough wind to take a few umbrellas down the beach, but Australia prevailed and Wilson was up against Atkinson for the Semis.

The wind continued to get stronger and the slow pace continued. Julian had an average opener with a couple of slashes down the line. Atkinson pulled out three good turns and came in for a break before the Final as Jesse went out for a little warm-up. It looked like Jesse was attempting some mind games when he paddled in to get his jersey just as Atkinson was paddling out. If Evans was trying to psyche Dion out, it obviously didn't work. Right as the buzzer sounded, Dion caught the best wave of the heat , making sure Jesse felt his spray. Murmuring about Australians in a local contest started under the Fox tent, along with some jokes about disqualifying the Aussie. Then a glimmer came when Jesse boosted a huge air- looking like he caught a gust of wind. The time wound down and both caught a couple more decent waves.

Julian Wilson took home almost all of the extra prize money with Best Air, Highest Wave Score, and Top Am. Merle Jones took home $250 for the highest heat total. And then it was time to see if Jesse Evans could actually hold his spot. Well, you've got to feel for Jesse, though he put up a good fight, Dion Atkinson came out with the win. But come on, Jesse just won the $1,000 Second Place purse, for 30 minutes of surfing. I'm not too sympathetic
