North Shore Week in Review: 11.27-12.03
PRIMO BEER AND THE DAWN OF “MAN RACING”
OK, now that things are officially underway in the water, it’s time for a bit of celebration. Primo Beer, the hundred-year-old Hawaiian brew that went out of business in 1998, is now back on tap. The beer made its first frothy appearance in conjunction with another re-emerging legend: the Bonzer. Host and Café Haleiwa owner Duncan Campbell just opened a new Bonzer and Art surf shop next to his legendary café, showcasing his brother Malcolm’s signature shapes and some sweet local art and clothing; the two brothers were on-hand for a night of fun and talking story to let all their friends check the rail and sample some Primo. Bonzer fans like Taylor Knox, Brad Gerlach and Daniel and Mikala Jones were all eager to participate, and with some country grooves from local musicians and more Primo than we could ever hope to consume, it was a night to be remembered. Or forgotten. Depending on how things went afterwards.
Roxy held their annual shin-dig at Waimea Falls the same night, and everyone who wasn’t in Bonzer-land was out on the dance floor shaking their boardies. More memorable stuff some of us forget probably happened, ’cause maybe some of us filing this story went to both parties and mixed various cocktails that shouldn’t really be mixed and things ended up getting a wee bit weird. Hey, it’s all in the name of good journalism, right?
Party girls.

If a lot of key surfers were missing form the line-ups around that time, it wasn’t from alcohol poisoning (not yet, at least). Three-time world champ Andy Irons got married on his home island of Kauai, and all his World Tour bros were on hand to share the joy. But this isn’t Star Magazine (but only because we don’t have our own helicopter to poach photos from), so we’ll just say that it was surely a very happy day for everyone involved. Congratulations to Andy and Lindy Irons. (*AI, who reportedly suffered a minor injury during a post-wedding surf, opted to pass on his O’Neill World Cup of Surfing heat at Sunset in favor of a well-deserved “extended honeymoon.” But we’re confident he’ll be around for the Billabong Pipe Masters.)
Meanwhile, at North Shore local Jason Shibata’s birthday party, a new event was being created: man racing. It’s basically as simple as it sounds: pick your guy, place your bets, send two racers barefoot to the far end of the road, and see who’s faster. Good times. For the record: Brian Toth is faster than Aussie Ryan Cambell. SURFING’s own Cody Welsh is faster than Joel Centio. And Fred Patacchia is faster than Jesse Merle-Jones (“I’m half black,” said Fred, returning to man the grill after his win). Place your future bets accordingly — this is a tradition that should certainly carry on.
