National Scholastic Surfing Association Gets A Whole New Look

By Evan Slater

The turn that inspired the new logo

Thirty years ago, when the best amateur organization in the nation had its humble beginnings, they created a logo featuring Bronzed Aussie Mark Warren doing a cutback. It took 20 years to change it out with an American, 2001 world champ CJ Hobgood.

And now, on the eve of the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s 30th anniversary, executive director Janice Aragon decided it’s high time for a new poster child. And what better candidate than eight-time NSSA national champ, ASP rookie of the year and current World Tour Standout Bobby Martinez, whose trademark backside blast is now permanently etched in print. “There’s no better guy than Bobby as the face of our new logo,” said Aragon a month after the most successful NSSA Nationals to date. “He was with us from the beginning and is a testament to the caliber of surfers our program produces. We couldn’t be more stoked to have Bobby on our banners for at least the next decade.”

The logo was inspired from SURFING staffer Jeff Flindt’s image of Martinez going straight up at Rincon. Check the image, check the new logo and be sure to check the NSSA’s 2007/08 season, starting this month.
