Surfing Announces Photo Department And Publisher Shifts

Steve Sherman (pictured here in black hat) will now be turned loose on the surfing world

Surfing Magazine is pleased to announce a few big changes on the horizon. Starting January 15, our supercharged photo editor, Steve Sherman, will be moving to the front lines full time and building on his foundation as the surf world’s most talented lifestyle photographer.

As a member of the SURFING Photo Unit he built, Sherm will continue to capture iconic moments in the sport, from the next “decisive” world title to timeless lineups to pro surfing in its most candid, rawest form. “I’ve had a great three and a half years here in the editor’s chair,” says Sherm. “But now it’s time to focus 100 percent on my career as a photographer. There are a ton of opportunities, and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get out there.”

Steve Sherman has been an integral part of SURFING Magazine’s evolution, and he didn’t make this decision until he found someone who could follow his lead and take the magazine to new heights. That successor will be announced soon.

On the publishing side, top ASG account executive Tony Perez will take over as SURFING Magazine’s Associate Publisher. Perez has been SURFING and Surfer’s top ad sales rep for more than seven years, and brings in a wealth of publishing and sales experience. “It’s going to be fun,” says Perez, who will be continuing many of the initiatives former publisher Ross Garrett started. “SURFING is already family to me, so the transition will be turn-key.”

SURFING welcomes Perez on board, and is excited to see what Sherm can do when he really goes Gonzo. Look for the results in future issues.
