2007 Rip Curl Pro Womens Finals

By Dylan Slater

SURF: 2-3’ Chop sui
EVENTS HELD: Last Call for the Ladies (Finals)
NATURE’S CALL: “We’re closed for Easter.”
-PREDICTIONS: Steph for Prime Minister

“You’ve got to earn it, to win it,” Rip Curl founder, owner, and #1 surfing enthusiast, Doug “Claw” Warbrick releases, as he paces around his self-named VIP seating area known as “Claw’s Box”. “It’s the test of endurance. The wave, the weather, it all plays a factor.” By now, Claw has a small audience inside the box listening to his takes. All of this, and we’re only 2 minutes into heat 1 of Day 3 of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro.

And, for those of you who know how to watch a sports game, Claw rolls better. Your lazy boys, flat screens, and beer dispensing helmets have nothing on Claw’s set up on site. His box literally extends out to the closest point of the peak, creating hall-of-fame perspectives of the world’s top 45. Not to mention a fridge fully stocked with his preferred beverages, computer scoreboards, efficient seating, etc. all contribute to the Box.

And there was no better view than from Claw’s Box to witness Steph Gilmore continue her World Title campaign. “It’s something about ACDC’s Hell’s Bells. Whenever they play it, waves just come,” Steph sheepishly grinned after her final trouncing over 2004 World Champ, Sofia Mulanovich. “The song has a whole new meaning for me now.”

And it should. To the distinct, hard-riffing song, Steph carved up a clinic to leave the Peruvian needing a perfect ride to overtake the lead. A 3 back leg-bending snap combo: 7.17. A snap-happy steep wall with a flare-for-finish: 9.33. Game, Set, Match. Thanks for coming.

For Steph, this remarkable win not only catapults her to #1 on the world rankings along with Chelsea Hedges, it also makes this her 3rd career ASP Women’s World Tour victory, despite only surfing in 6 events. 6 events, 3 wins? You do the math.

What’s next for the newest Rip Curl Women’s Pro victor? “I’m goin’ to the Ball [RC Pro 35th Anniversary Ball], mate. I guess we got a reason to celebrate now, don’t we?” Yep, and so does women’s surfing.
