Help Ryan Carlson

Ryan Carlson has been hospitalized with MRSA, a very serious form of staph infection. He got it in his left foot from a sea urchin he stepped on in Puerto Rico. He also got it in his right knee from a spider bite in Ca. He is currently getting better but his hospital and medication bills are ridiculously high.Ryan has no medical insurance so he and his family are going to need some serious financial help to get through all of this. Any form of help or support is greatly appreciated.

There will be 2 benefit parties in Huntington Beach. One will be Wednesday the 14th. The location should be confirmed by this weekend. The other will be at Gallaghers pub on Sunday the 18th. We're also working on a location in San Clemente.

Best wishes to Ryan on his recovery. Hopefully we will see you out in the water soon. Just as a clarification, the "spider bite" is actually a spontaneous MRSA abscess and likely served as a source for contamination of his foot. People are often asymptomatic carriers of MRSA (USA300 strain), but it is rampant in the community -- I don't know which classifies Ryan's case but a nasal swab and culture could answer that. The two main poisonous spiders in california, the black widow (indigenous) and brown recluse (non-indigenous), do not cause superficial abscesses or cellulitis. Additionally, the spiders are frequently identified when bitten. Black widow bites cause systemic symptoms while brown recluse cause skin necrosis.

Here's a better concept: Take the money you would have given to Ryan, and donate it to some other genius pro surfer without health insurance. They can use it to sign up for insurance, and then we won't have yet another fundraiser to pay their medical bills, form injuries incurred while they're on vacation and we're at work. It's pretty simple: take responsibility for your life. Get health insurance if you don't have a real job that comes with benefits.

To the "responible adult" who left the unnecessary comment. That takes some balls to say something about someone you dont even know and obviously dont care about. Why dont you leave your real name when you write something like that since your on such a higher pedistal than everyone else. Maybe us pro surfers without "real jobs" can look you up and ask for more advice. Or a beatdown....

I'm so glad that I'm 'irresponsible' and run my own computer software, and aviation research business. I always donate to things like this because it's a charitable donation! Which means I don't have to pay the government to start wars, and I get to help a person! I'm so glad I'm not a worthless 'responsible guy' with a 'real job' that pays for my health insurance. Instead I'm a crazy business owner that took risks so I can follow my passions, feel like I'm 'on vacation', and give many people support and lively hood. If I caught someone that worked for me speaking like the aforementioned 'responsible adult', I'd probably fire them on the spot. I urge anyone who can to help out Ryan. If you can't then just go about with your day and don't make a huge stink about it. One does what one can
