State of Reef: What if the next world-class wave will be your backyard beachbreak?

Rumor has it that in about two year’s time, the wave-rich country of South Africa will receive its first artificial surfing reef. Located directly on Cape St. Francis (home to the infamous Bruce’s Beauties in the original Endless Summer), this project is scheduled for completion of the first phase in 2008. This project will not be just one reef, but a series of 3-4 multi-purpose reefs, one specifically to restore Bruce's Beauties to the perfection of its former self. While sessions of classic perfection can still be had at Bruce’s today, stabilization of coastal dunes to prevent sand from blowing into housing developments has significantly cut-off the supply of fine-grained sand that once abundantly covered the reef. The resulting loss of sediment, coupled with abnormal storm events, has contributed to severe beach erosion, and has greatly reduced the number of surfable days for the break and surrounding areas.

To show the world of surfing the possibilities, the 6th International Surfing Reef Conference is scheduled to be on location in Cape St. Francis. Not only will attendees learn how to build a better surfing reef, but may get to dash out between sessions and catch a few designer tubes for some true hands-on R&D.

As for the extended future, Black predicts we will see exponential growth for multi-purpose reef projects around the globe. “Going way over the top, I could see thousands of reefs. Mainly they will be for coastal protection, many for surfing only, but overall for the multi-purpose. As a guess, in 10 years time, 200 reefs; 20 years time, 2000 reefs.”

With so many outstanding waves either threatened or extinct, it is inspiring to see such enormous energy directed towards both restoration and new creations. Perhaps it will take a few more revolutions around the sun for most of the surfing population to see the light, but based on the growing successes, exploding rate of activity, and talent driving the artificial surfing reef industry, the probability of this phenomenon impacting your backyard gets better by the day.
