WQS Update With Al Hunt

Congratulations to Adriano de Souza (pictured above) on his two-in-a-row winning streak in Brazil, taking out this week’s Onbongo Pro Surfing ASP WQS 6-Star event in Ubatuba, Brazil.

Adriano has come out of nowhere recently, jumping from 39th to 31st to currently 11th. Kieren Perrow has finally clinched another good result to push him well up the ratings into 8th at 11,614 points. Kieren has been without a good result since his victory at Margaret River and 5th in Durban in April. It’s taken six months but finally it came.

Meanwhile the other borderline competitor, Neco Padaratz, failed to get a result in Brazil and is still just out of the cut along with Shea Lopez, Dayyan Neve and Dan Ross, who all need at least a quarterfinal in Haleiwa to make enough points to be near or on the cutoff point.

Others to watch are Jarrad Howse and Patrick Beven, who have low throwaways, but still require quarterfinals at least to catch the others.

Currently, there are six ASP World Tour double qualifiers with C.J. Hobgood, Adrian Buchan and Jeremy Flores looking not likely to need their WQS rating, and Rodrigo Dornelles, Adriano de Souza and Royden Bryson sitting reasonably safe, but you never know.

That means that the current cutoff point is with Troy Brooks at 10,300, but just in case a couple of Rodrigo, Adriano and Royden need their WQS rating, let’s say the real cutoff is 10,400.

The way it sits now is that we have five surfers on over 12,000 points, thirteen on over 11,000, another five with around 10,700 plus points and lastly Nic Muscroft, Shaun Cansdell and Troy Brooks just hanging in there.

Looking at the ratings going into Hawaii, it seems that not much will happen unless we get a group of guys all making the quarterfinals that are currently just out of the WQS 15.

If this happens, the O’Neill World Cup at Sunset will be interesting for a lot of competitors.

Usually, we only have a couple sweating on others to lose or themselves to keep on making heats. This year could be a very different case.

The next couple of events, the Xcel Pro ASP WQS 4-Star in Hawaii and 3-Star Estoril Pro in Portugal will not have any major bearing on the ratings, but a win could push someone up into a position for a possible charge in the Hawaiian 6 star primes to end off the season.
