Hawaii is big – unfortunately too big and stormy today to complete the Round of 64 in the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach.

With one and a half days of competition left, there have been no changes in the ASP WQS Top 15. However, the bottom line in points has risen slightly to 10,513 where Nic Muscroft (AUS) is sitting.

The ASP WQS Top 15 are pretty well set except for possibly the bottom four who are Gabe Kling (USA), Luke Munro (AUS), Shaun Cansdell (AUS) and Nic Muscroft (AUS). Nic and Shaun are still in the event so they have a good chance of improving their position.

However Dayyan Neve (AUS), Dan Ross (AUS) and Kirk Flintoff (AUS) are hot on their heels. Ross has been the one to watch this event, holding down the two highest wave and heat scores of the event so far.

Dayyan needs only a 7th to overtake Munro and Kling, while Ross needs a 5th and Flintoff a 4th.

Cansdell needs a 13th and Muscroft a 9th to be safe, but a 17th and 9th would see them overtake Kling and Munro, which should be enough.

It will be an interesting day of competition when we resume here in Hawaii, with five guys fighting it out for three spots. Of course four of them could make the final creating another completely different scenario, and pushing the points to way over 11,000 - where then Royden Bryson (ZAF), Adriano de Souza (BRA) and Miky Picon (FRA) are possible casualties.

On the women’s side of things, congratulations go to Sofia Mulanovich (PER) on a great win in the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, which has now made the ASP Women’s World Title race extremely close.

Although Mulanovich is second in the ratings because she has a lower throw away score than Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), all Mulanovich has to do is match Gilmore to take home the title.

Gilmore must beat Mulanovich by one place while Silvana Lima (BRA) is still in with a chance, but needs Gilmore and Mulanovich to bomb out by 5th place.

If Gilmore and Mulanovich get a 9th, then Lima needs a 2nd; if they get a 5th, then Lima needs a win; and anything better than 5th for either of them, then Lima can’t win. For the girls, the ASP WQS qualifiers are unchanged with Nicola Atherton (AUS) still hoping for no changes in the Top 10 on the ASP Women’s World Tour.

I would say that there may be only one possible change and that would be if Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) can jump from 13th into the top 10 knocking out Melanie Bartels (HAW). This would mean that Nicola would drop one spot and be out of the ASP WQS Top 6.
