THE 2003 BILLABONG PRO TEAHUPO'O: DAY FIVE
Kelly Slater: in between Owl Chapman lookbacks.

And now, today's surfing. Hopefully, you'll appreciate it for what it's worth.
1. Kelly Slater.
Fresh off a flight from the Gold Coast, Kelly's surfing today was for mature audiences only -- meaning that the younguns might become very disturbed if exposed to his dominating performance. Damien Hobgood had figured the six-time world champ would show up in some Quiksilver hot-air ballon or something. So maybe it was a bit of a let down when he only showed up at the last minute to freesurf, and in the process, win his heat convincingly. Memorable moment: Owl Chapman look-back out the tube worth 9.5.
2. Beau Emerton.
The bloke is thicker than ever. Through a combination of beer, vegemite and determination, this was his day. He ruled his heat from the buzzer and did it with style for an overall score of 18.47 out of 20.00. With under-the-lip snaps and deep, cave-mining transactions--this may be one guy to keep an eye on. Then again, he's had single big heats here before. Memorable moment: Mellow-guy tube pose worth 9.7.
3. Conan Hayes.
This is only one name from the heat of the day. The other two were Shane Dorian and Mark Occhilupo. Along with Nan', these boys surfed with enough passion to win another three miracle world titles among them, if they could only be won in a single wave-for-wave mind-exploding 30 minutes. In the fading minutes of the heat, Conan took the win with a backup wave worth 7.67. Occ had a 9.0. Shane-O had a 9.5. Conan had the opportunity to remind us that he's still world class. Memorable moment: Triple-section gear-shifter worth 9.73.
As you can see, the boys were laughing. And that's how it will stay as long as they get what they want.-- Hagan Kelley
