2003 ASP/WCT BILLABONG PRO, JEFFREYS BAY: DAY THREE
The performance of the day was delivered in heat two by Damien Hobgood, with two exceptional 8+ pointers. On a day when the barrels were pinching rather than pitching, Hobgood found one with a clean open bubble and sailed through a crisp two-section slot. In a string of five Brazil versus Australia match-ups, the score was tipped 3/2 in favor of the Zillos. Neco Padaratz, sporting a hideously unfashionable mohican, Armando Daltro and Victor Ribas defeated Nathan Webster, the Hog and Luke Hitchings respectively. Padaratz in particular challenged the reputation the Brazilians have as one dimensional beach-break specialists. Fresh off a $15000 win in Durban, Neco put his stomping forehand snaps to work, picking up the highest scoring wave of the day at 9.0. Let's hope the fashion police aren't in town. Lee Winkler and Shane Powell pulled two back for the Wallabies with wins over Paulo Moura and Danilo Costa. Powell, the former world number two, was brandishing a white board with two small logos up on the nose. While surfers with a fraction of his ability land six figure contracts, Powelly's traveling the tour sans a clothing sponsor. If anyone's out there window shopping, here's a good man with a great pedigree. Nine heats were surfed before it got too dark. It's as cold as a witch's tit right now, which is a good thing. Cold weather means firing waves in J-Bay, so there1s a 90% probability that the comp will run first thing in the morning.
But of all the wild spectacles seen so far in these parts -- from strange hairdos to dolphin parades -- at the end of day three that elusive perfect score has yet to be spotted. Perhaps tomorrow. -- Jeremy Saville/ZigZag Billabong Pro Round Two Heats (1st>Rnd3; 2nd=33rd receives US$3,000) Remaining Round Two Heats (1st>Rnd3; 2nd=33rd receives US$3,000)
