Day 20, and the final instalment of Rip Curl On The Rock sees us hand out the annual Golden Pineapple awards. The biggest barrel, the best wipeout, the best world title win by a female named Steph Gilmore. Hosted by Pancho Sullivan.

Slouching Toward a World Title

So now, in his first shot at 8, Kelly has to surf in Round 2, most likely against Collazo. This is obviously not the way he wanted to start out this contest, but it fits with the ultra casual approach he's taken all year. Some examples? A Round 1 no show at J-Bay, hardly any free surfing between heats, flirting with retirement and a seemingly "what me worry" attitude to it all. All of the laxity so far has led to one of the most consistent years of his career in terms of results (which must drive his rivals nuts.) But could this be the contest where cruise mode no longer works? Or will missing his heat be a needed wake up call that inspires him blow out Collazo and regain his trademark laser beam competitive focus?

Time will tell.

That's the thing ­ this one could take a while. And with not a whole lot to do in this pretty little town, it's not going to go by fast. 8 heats done in two days is a solid start but it could the weekend before Mundaka even ripples again. In the meantime, Parko and Fanning are surfing the best they ever have (both destroyed the marginal waves in their heats today.) There's also the option to run a few heats at a beachbreak around the corner called Bakio. After the Coolie Kids inspired performances in France, both now have outside shots at the title as well, making for one of the most interesting stretch runs in years.

Andy and Taj have yet to surf, but they're here and they're ready. Next time, Kelly will be as well.
