2005 QUIKSILVER PRO READY TO START
“It’s a dream come true – that’s for sure!” grinned Gilmore after her conquest. “All the girls were surfing so well, especially Carissa. She is amazing. I was still riding a body board when I was 12. I wasn’t stressing in the third round, conserving my energy for the final, though I was sitting a little too far out for the waves that made the link inside, but I worked it out for the final.” The men’s final was a wave-starved affair on the retreating tide with Leigh Sedley opening with an 8.0 and hanging onto the lead for most of the 30 minute affair. After starting with a 7.25, and needing just 6.01, Shaun Gossman turned to Sedley with three minutes remaining and said “You know you’ve got this!” but he spoke too soon. With less than a minute to go, defending trials champ’ Gossman stroked into a small wave and yielded a 6.5, leaving Sedley high and dry searching for 5.75 in the becalmed time slot. Gossman had done it again. He has drawn Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison in the first round. “I just felt really confident for that heat, and all the heats, knowing I could do well if I got the waves,” glowed Gossman, into the Quiksilver Pro presented by Boost Mobile main event yet again. “I’ve been feeling like that this whole year. I’m just hoping I can go from here and get a good start to my ‘QS campaign as well, so that I can be here next year as a member of the Top 45, and won’t have to do the trials again.” There lies the aspirations of the entire Top 45 and Women’s Top 17 for 2005. All are out for a solid start here at Snapper Rocks in the first WCT events of the season, dreading even consideration of needing to struggle through the ‘QS system. We’ll see if we’re straight into the action with the report at 6am tomorrow (Tuesday).
The Quiksilver Pro Presented by Boost Mobile, and the Roxy Pro Presented by Boost Mobile, are both made possible by the support of the Gold Coast City Council. Both tournaments will feature the specialty awards made possible by co-sponsor Evian. The Evian Longest Tube Ride is worth $5000 for the winning male and female surfer to slot into the longest Gold Coast barrel of the tournament. Timekeepers will be their eyes on their stopwatches.
