Inside The Padang Shipwreck

All Photos By Nathan Lawrence
Story and Captions By Nathan Myers

The once pristine waters are still putrid with oil and gasoline. The crew of the abandoned Taiwanese fishing vessel are still on the run from the police. A 100-foot ship still sits mid-lineup at Padang Padang. And the waiting period for the Rip Curl ISC Padang contest is still in effect.

Here are some of SURFING photograher Nate Lawrence's highlights from the wreck occupying one of Bali's premier breaks, and an impending environmental disaster. If anyone knows anything about getting boats off reefs, please step forward...when the next big swell hits, this situation could get a whole lot worse.

Duh guys get a tug boat, or 2 on the stearn and tug. The heavy surf at high tide will make the opperation actualy easier. And by the way try to patch the holes in the bow before you pull it off the reef, you dont want it to sink 20 yards out.

As Matt Skid said; its really not rocket science getting the boat out of there. Perhaps a good idea would be to start collecting donations from surfers, pros and you guys to help pay for the ammount of money it going to take to get it out of there. Then you could go though the courts and claim the boat as yours and turn it into a charter surf boat Just an idea

RipCurl should step up and clear this mess. Especially with their upcoming ISC contest as well as the 'SOMEWHERE' ASP world circuit contest scheduled to be held(rumour has it) in Bali. How much money do they stand to make by exploiting Bali's wave resources? Couldn't they do the right thing and give back a little. And couldn't they run an add after, RIPCURL SAVES BALI FROM AN ENVIROMENTAL DISASTER. Step up!

how bout we fly all some of the factory workers from name surfbrand factories in from china and let them see what all the fuss is about...does anyone know how much they earn in a month or what their living conditions are like???...ripcurl are retailing boardies for nearly $100 each!!!!.....I garantee you rip curl fuckwits out there that this is way less than the monthly wage given to these workers..and how about the western registered fishing vessels that fish indo waters and pay bribes.....you surf industry types are so far up your own arseholes you cant see reality for crap!!!!

Wow, I saw the 'effort' (was it a ripcurl?) to pull that ship out yesterday. Couple of wooden canoes with outboards??? Better try a bit harder than that or Martin Daly is going to come down with a real ship and save the day giving Quicksilver all the good press.

any company in the salvage towing industry would have that removed in 48 hours if any company would be willing to front the money. they all claim to support the environment, but no one really does. we'll have to wait until jack johnson holds a concert to raise the money.

I was there three days after shipwreck. It would have been possible to take the ship off with the first high tide using one tugboat linked to the aft part of the ship. Now the ship is on the rocks and I think it is quite impossible to take her off because the ship is on the portside on the rocks. Anyway, with high tide and using one or two powerful tugboats can take the ship off but the risk is that the hull will crash the reef and maybe can leak sludges, bilges or fuel. I was surfing padang these days and the water was dirty and smelling oils.
